CITY OF NEW BRITAIN CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION

Announces An Open Competitive Examination For

Job Title: Bus Driver

$21.850 – $24.697 hourly (4 steps)

Department: Parks and Recreation, Senior Center

Job Summary: Drives bus and performs related duties to assist senior citizens in the full participation of senior center and city sponsored activities.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the Senior Center Transportation Coordinator. Follows scheduled route.

Supervision Exercised: None.

Examples of Essential Duties:

1. Drives assigned trips to transport senior citizens to medical/*personal appointments, grocery shopping,* special events, the Senior Center, and other destinations as assigned.

2. Assists passengers in boarding and leaving vehicle. May move special equipment, such as medical devices, walkers, wheel chairs, and bundles.

3. Prior to operating makes a pre-safety inspection of vehicle. Checks fluids, tires, and takes corrective action as necessary. Observes operation of vehicle. Reports any problems to supervisor. Cleans vehicle and performs minor maintenance.

4. Operates vehicle in a safe manner; observing motor vehicle laws and general rules of highway.

5. Performs related work as required.

Examples of Incidental Duties:

1. Maintains log of passenger trips and vehicle performance as required.

2. Performs related tasks at senior center as necessary.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Knowledge of motor vehicle laws and regulations, a working knowledge of city streets and public service locations, ability to safely operate assigned vehicle, ability to perform routine motor vehicle cleaning and minor maintenance, ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form, ability to work cooperatively and courteously with passengers and with the public.

Minimum Qualifications Required: Graduation from high school and one year experience in operating a public service vehicle.

License or Certificate: Connecticut Public Service/Passenger Endorsement “F” Driver’s License required, Connecticut Public Service/Passenger Endorsement “A” Driver’s License. Preferred. License Endorsements are REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION

Physical Exertion/ Environmental Conditions: Physical ability to assist passengers, ability to lift and carry light to medium weight packages and bundles, ability to drive in inclement conditions, ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions, including cold, heat, rain or snow, exposure to hazards of highway driving, must exercise extreme caution in carrying out responsibilities.

 

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: The probationary period for this position shall be twelve (12) months.

THIS OPEN COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION WILL BE COMPOSED OF:

Experience & Training – 100 %

PASSING GRADE: The minimum passing grade is 70%.

RULE OF THE LIST: Names of all eligible candidates on the open competitive employment list will be forwarded to the appointing authority for employment consideration.

DURATION OF EMPLOYMENT LIST: A certified employment list shall be in effect for one year from the date of its establishment by the Civil Service Commission. Subsequent to the initial certification of the employment list, no sooner than l0 months and no later than 11 months and 29 days from date of initial certification, the Commission may, upon the showing and finding of exigent or extenuating circumstances, extend the duration of the list when it is deemed to be in the best interest of the City. The City, or any individual, may request that consideration of extension be placed on the Civil Service regular meeting agenda by notifying the Personnel Director no later than one calendar week prior to the monthly meeting. The maximum period of time that a list shall remain in effect is two years from date of initial certification.

 

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: Prior to beginning work, the successful candidate must complete and qualify on a City medical examination (including a drug screen) and a background investigation.

REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS: All requests for reasonable accommodations in the testing process must be made in writing, no later than the closing date for applications. Documentation of the disability for which the accommodation is being requested, and what specific accommodation is being requested, must be received no later than the closing deadline for applications. The candidate’s failure to provide documentation which satisfies the City’s requirements by the timetable above will result in an inability to provide an accommodation in the testing process. However, the candidate who meets the minimum qualifications for the position would still be eligible to compete with all other candidates in the standard testing process.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR CITY OF NEW BRITAIN RESIDENTS: Proof of domicile shall be filed at the time of filing the application. (Please see form attached). Failure to provide proof of domicile in accordance with this timetable will result in no residency consideration being granted for this examination.
